How Do Republican Principles Affect Our View on Local Government Issues?

A Baseline Measure to Evaluate Issues and Politicians

We believe the Republican Party needs to take an issue based stand in local non-partisan elections. Candidates for office in non-partisan elections, such as elections for Mayor and City Council in Norfolk should be evaluated on our Republican principles.

We believe the government closest to the people is best. Just as we strongly support the return of power to the states from the Federal government, so do we seek the greatest possible grant of authority to local government by the State.

For this reason we shall not ask our state legislature to do or undo in Richmond those things that ought to be decided locally. The constitutional powers of the state over cities and counties are a double-edged sword that can accomplish liberal as well as conservative ends.

In short, we want to have decisions affecting local government made by those we elect in our local communities, not by legislators from distant parts of the state.

Strength From Diversity and Unity of Purpose

We believe that diversity of the people of Hampton Roads is an immense source of strength. Support for our community comes from citizens of all faiths who work hard, who believe that the free enterprise system helps everyone enjoy a better life, and who cherish individual liberty. Therefore, we strive to educate the public about Republican values and solicit support from all citizens in the Tidewater area.

We reject any candidate seeking our support who attacks any individual or group on grounds other than political philosophy. As conservatives, we have a bedrock interest in the political stability and public order which leads to a unified community.
